Paper Positions

The series „Brandmale“ consists of a group of loosely related works on paper, created
on sheets bearing scorch marks from a studio fire. To the burned traces inherent in the
material itself are added hastily sketched motifs in ink applied with a dip pen, washed
with remnants of coffee. Together they form a circling sequence of images that seem
to emerge from soot and destruction, establishing significant new markers in the visual
language of the deconstructive painter Florian Pelka.
In this sense, the serie „Brandmale“ also stands for a creative and playful force capable
of transforming crisis into something productive without concealing the wound. Narrative
in Florian Pelka’s work remains a play of differences. The patterns and icons can
assume symbolic force only provisionally and never fully resolve into a higher revelatory
meaning. The spectator is always required to commit to the raw gesture and the bare
texture of the artistic work.
